The heart and soul of Old Chicago was the Fairgrounds. Standing at
the top of the ramp looking out at everything they stuffed into this
giant room always left me awestruck no matter how many times I visited.
Looking out at the Chicago Loop the Log Race and more you knew you were
going to have a truly special day.
After gaping at the view for a minute or two it was time to speed down
the ramp to get a ticket to this magical park under a domed roof.
Looking back you'd get a candy bar for fifty cents when Old Chicago was
open you could fill up your gas tank for $0.60 cents a gallon. A
candy bar cost $0.20. A hamburger at McDonalds cost $0.38.
Using those costs the $6.95 cost for a ticket to Old Chicago wasn't as
inexpensive as it seems but in todays money it'd be $38 which is a good
value for a day at a theme park.
Once down in the Fairgrounds and past the ticket booth it was always a
tough call as what to do or where to go. You could go to the Fun
Factory to run around and play, there was the magic show, the Old
Chicago International Circus, there was the old Vaudeville show that
also played old comedy movies, or you could go and take in Old Chicago's
rides.
