Andrew is a complete genius! What do you do if you want to ride a
coaster but you have a container of food from a parks Asian restaurant
that you have not completed? You close up the container and place
it in the coaster's storage bin and go for a ride before continuing your
meal afterwards. Totally brilliant.
After more than hour of Timber Wolf laps we decided to grab one more
ride on the Cosmic Coaster. It ended up being an interesting
experience. As we walked up to the ride the operator instructed us
to get on the loading platform and to get on the ride. Once locked
in we were informed that the park was on lockdown and that we would have
to stay there.
The reason we were locked down on the Cosmic Coaster was due to the
large number of parent-less teenagers that descended on Worlds of Fun in
the afternoon. Initially there were just large groups of teenagers
congregating at various points of the park to talk, hanging out and just
being kids. Unfortunately as the evening went on confrontation
started to edge into the groups. There were instances of groups of
kids yelling at each other and park security broke it up. The
group would show up some where else and confrontation would begin again.
Worlds of Fun's security broke it up and it would happen again. As
we were headed to Timber Wolf to end the day it got bad. Teenagers
started fighting each other and they started assaulting security.
What happened was that security saw them out of the park and fights
broke out in the parking lot causing quite a few KCPD to descend on the
park to restore order. With what happened outside the park we were
told to keep put until the situation was over with.
It ended up being a comfortable half hour seated on the Cosmic coaster
talking with the other couple of guests on the ride as well as the ride
op as we watched the flashing lights of police head into the parking
lot.
We did end up with a ride on the Cosmic Coaster well after the park was
closed. Here are the guys with our heroic Cosmic Coaster ride
operator Ty.
It was a weird ending to a great day. It really sucked that these
kids couldn't leave bullshit behind and just have a fun at a park.
I used to spend my Saturday nights camped out at Astroworld when I lived
in Houston. You have fun with your friends, ride a few rides and
hit on whatever girl or guy catches your fancy. Going to a park to
start some shit is just plain stupid.
I do have to say that I was extremely impressed with the professionalism
of everyone at Worlds of Fun throughout the situation. Security
did everything possible to deescalate the situation and and make it so
everyone could have fun at the park. Sadly it was a slow news day
and this story went far and wide but don't let it keep you from visiting
Worlds of Fun. With all of the improvements small and large that
the park has had in recent memory as well as staff that really works
hard to give everyone a great time I see Worlds of Fun growing from just
being a theme park but into more of a resort.
