You are not seeing a hallucination here the coaster formerly
known as Evil Knievel and American Thunder is now "Cubs Thunder" and
the Chicagoan in me was loving it!
If you have been living under a rock then you might have not heard
that The Chicago Cubs finally put a really good team together.
So good in fact that they made the post season this year going up
against the St. Louis Cardinals after beating the Pittsburgh Pirates
in the Wild Card game.
With the two rival cities each with a Six Flags a bet was hatched.
Whoever won the series had to rename a coaster (for the rest of the
year) to the other team. Well the Cubs took down the Cardinals
and Cubs fan's got to do something that rarely happens...they got to
brag up their team!
As someone who lives between St. Louis and Chicago there are a lot
of ribbing each other and at work I have to deal with more than a
few Cardinals fans who get way too excited about saying that the
Cubs suck. Needless to say this was a wonderful year to be a
Cubs fan. For me it was an added benefit to see the sign out
front of Six Flags St. Louis saying "Come Ride Cubs Thunder" and to
see the the sign in the park.
It was really fun seeing all of the people in Cubs gear hanging out
by their ride. We saw many high fives from strangers, a few
hugs and lots of cheering when someone would yell out "go Cubs"!
I even saw a few St. Louis fans walk on by refusing to ride.
Remember it is just a game and you won't win every bet.
I spoke with Park President Dave Roemer while we were there and he
said that since the bet attendance was through the roof with not
just the fans spreading the word but they had nation wide media
attention due to the bet.
