Since Marriott's Great America opened up in 1976 The Demon has
been the parks looping coaster.
That last statement wasn't entirely accurate so let's do a little
clarifying. The Demon opened with the park as the Turn of the
Century and ran under that name until the end of the 1979 season.
Between the end of the 1979 season and the start of the 1980 season saw
the removal of the Turn's airtime hills that were replaced with two
vertical loops and a bunch of "demonic theming" that included tunnels, a
cheesy soundtrack for the queue, and this demonic stone cave that you
dive into after the rides mid-course brake run.
Unfortunately the waterfall that you dive under as The Demon comes out
of the cave is long gone as it was rusting the track. Actually I
have heard rumors that the corkscrew on The Demon was replaced with the
corkscrew from the long gone Shock Wave coaster due to the rust damage.
I'm not sure if that is true but it'd be nice if some of the Shock Wave
lived on.
Sadly my favorite theming element that was added to the Turn of the
Century went away with the waterfall as there used to be a lake under
the corkscrews. The water in the lake was dyed blood red and as
the Corkscrew looped overhead there were a couple of fountains that
would spray some of the red stuff towards the trains but not high enough
to get riders wet.
