Superman replaces Six Flags Great America's old Shock Wave looping
coaster and while it was sad to see Shockwave's fantastic curving drop not
towering over the park Superman is a considerably better ride.
Superman was originally supposed to take over the spot where the Whizzer
sits but after massive public outcry and from what I hear some massive maintenance
issues with Shockwave the beloved Whizzer was saved and Superman now sits
where Shockwave once was.
Superman Ultimate Flight is a copy of the prototype ride that sits at Six
Flags Over Georgia, sans the third train and dual loading station as it
was found that they weren't really needed as they didn't increase the ride's
capacity enough to justify the cost.
I have to say that I slightly prefer the version at Six Flags Over Georgia
as the design is actually a terrain coaster as that ride sets on the side
of a hill. The one at Great America sits on a site that once was a
flat parking lot so you really don't have as many close calls with Terra
Firma. Still Six Flags took some of the complaints about the lack
of landscaping under Shockwave (you could still see the parking spaces)
and made Superman look like part of the park.
