Growing up in the 1980's it seems like there were a billion movies made
in the Chicago area. Pre-Blues Brothers in the 1970's Hollywood
never came to Chicago so it was a big deal when director Brian De Palma
decided to set much of his supernatural thriller "The Fury" in Chicago.
What is interesting was that the filmmakers behind The Fury were pretty
excited about having all of Chicago participate in making of their movie
as written about in the July 26th edition of the Chicago Tribune.
In addition to filming around the Chicago area Old Chicago was to be one
of the major set pieces in this tale of a battle between two telekinetic
teenagers who are being manipulated by the CIA to become assassins.
This blurb in the August 21st 1977 Chicago Tribune encouraged crowds to
head to the park to help out with filming.
Old Chicago certainly used the opportunity to promote the park even in
the Southtown Star on the same day as crowds were encouraged. My
sister and I were taken there on one of the filming days by our
babysitter and the park was slammed with people all hoping to make it up
on the silver screen in one of the films scenes.
This article from the September 28th 1977 edition of The Life described
a day in the life of three extras who filmed the scene in The Fury when
a Paratrooper car goes flying through the window into the Old Chicago
Beer Garden. A note of correction the article describes the car
that flies through the window as a "Ferris wheel car" despite being from
Old Chicago's Paratrooper.
