Unfortunately performing high over the hard concrete floor of Old
Chicago without a safety net has its hazards and on Sunday November 30th
Jimmy Troy "The Comedy King of the Air" slipped and fell to his death in
front of a packed crowd.
This article from the Arizona Daily Star form December 4th shows how far
the death of Jimmy Troy spread in the news.
This article from the December 4th edition of the Lemont Metropolitan
goes into more detail about the incident. "The show must go on" as
they say.
The show did go on. As I remember from future shows the aerialists
performed higher but there was always a safety net beneath them.
For the first year the Old Chicago International Circus performed at
this spot next to the rotor.
In later years the circus moved a few feet over inside of the Chicago
Loop's final turn. The bleachers came right up to the track and if
you sat all the way in the back (my favorite seat) every few minutes
another trainload of screaming riders would speed on by.
