The Racer Rollercoaster at Kings Island, Kings island, Ohio

In 1970 John Allen of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company had retired from designing coasters.  With Cincinnati's Coney Island Island planning to move away from the Ohio River shore to a new site that would not be flooded every spring, they wanted to retain a little of Coney Island's magic.  To do so they reached out to John Allen and coaxed him out of retirement to design and build what was to become The Racer.

Just like the rest of John Allen's coasters The Racer is a stunningly gorgeous ride that is filed with a lot of speed....

...and plenty of airtime.

The Racer's trains (that actually race) stay neck and neck until it hits the turnaround where they peel apart.

The Racer is a phenomenal ride but it also is owed a ton of respect for another reason.
