After ten years of operation it was announced that Kennywood would
remove the Steel Phantom. Fans were not happy to be loosing such
an iconic ride. Thankfully the park listened to their concerns and
hired Morgan Manufacturing to keep the best of Steel Phantom and
transform it into Phantom's Revenge for the 2001 season.
For Phantom's Revenge the over the shoulder restraints were scrapped as
Morgan reworked the trains to have a lap bar restraint. The
legendary second drop was lengthened from 225 to 228 feet. The
loops were removed and an additional two hundred feet of airtime filled
track was added to the rides total length.
Without the loops there isn't a single bad thing I can say about
Phantom's Revenge. While Mamba at Worlds of Fun is my favorite
Morgan coaster I have to say that their work transforming Steel Phantom
to Phantom's Revenge is by far their best work.
If I haven't already given you a few dozen reasons to visit Kennywood
here is another one. Phantom's Revenge is an airtime lover's dream
as you can see in this photo. You spend about as much time pressed
up against your lap bar as your rear end is pressed down on your seat.
Like the rest of the coasters at Kennywood Phantom's Revenge is just
perfect.
When visiting Kennywood make sure to say "hi" to Kenny Kangaroo.
At Kennywood there was always music, costumed characters, or performers
all over the park. Those things really add to the atmosphere.
More parks need to follow Kennywood's lead here and bring back
entertainment to their parks.
