Being a park f
ull of classic rides one would have to expect Kennywood
to have a classic hand carved carousel.
The Grand Carousel was built in 1926 for the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial
by William H. Dentzel.
The carousel was planned for the sesquicentennial celebration but it never
made it there as it was not completed in time.
With Dentzel being one of the preeminent carousel builders of the time Kennywood
approached the company at the end of 1926 for a larger and more grand carousel
than the park had. With Dentzel eager to get rid of the carousel Kennywood
got a hell of a deal as it only cost $25,000 and that price was reduced
as they traded in the old three ring carousel like one would trade in a
car.
There are seventy-two animals on the Grand Carousel, most being horses.
While it is not a jumper this lion is my favorite of all of them.
It is a magnificent work of art that like the rest of the carousel is wonderfully
cared for by Kennywood.
