Cedar Point was known as a really good regional amusement park up until the 1980's but when they broke the 200 foot barrier with Magnum XL-200 the entire world stood up and took notice.

Magnum was built by Arrow Dynamics and with no loops it was just an extension of rides like Excalibur that ran at Six Flags Astroworld in Houston or Cedar Point's Gemini that took Arrow's mine train and just made it taller and taller with airtime thrown in for the thrills.

Magnum created the genre of coasters that is known as a "hyper coaster".

Hyper coasters are between 200 and 299 feet tall and have no inversions.  They are all about speed and airtime.
