Across the midway from Corkscrew sat Top Thrill Dragster.
The worst kept secret in the coaster world was that Top Thrill Dragster
was being modified by Zamperla to have a launch powered by linear
synchronous motors replacing the rides old hydraulic launch.
The other part of the secret was that there would be a tower added to
the ride over by Iron Dragon to act as a reverse spike so the new
launch can send the train forward, back, and forward as it speeds up a
little bit with each launch until the coaster can crest the 420 foot
tall tower.
A week after my visit Top Thrill 2 was announced and all of the rumors
came true and the reverse spike started to grow from these footers.
Magnum XL-200 is the coaster that not only put Cedar Point on the map
worldwide but it also started the "coaster wars" of the late 1980's.
