Adventureland Amusement Park, Altoona, Iowa

Phoenix was a fun coaster but it had the weirdest operations.

When we got in line the Phoenix kept shutting down for no reason.  The ride operators would close the ride, stand around for a few minutes before going to the edge of the station and put their hand out.  If there was no precipitation (it was going back and forth between barely raining and not) they would start up the ride until the next couple of micro-rain drops began to fell when they'd shut it down again.

We watched a few cycles of this and by the time we got up to the station I had to ask why they were shutting it down over and over.  According to the ride operators this ride was destined for a different park.  At the original park it was supposed to be enclosed.  Well the sale with the first park fell through and Adventureland got this coaster as a deal.  The only problem is as it was designed to be an indoor coaster and as a result as soon as any drops hit the area they shut it down as hard as if there were a thunderstorm in the area.

If you visit Adventureland on a day with any precipitation in the forecast get your ride on The Phoenix as soon as you can.

Storm Chaser is a wonderful way to get a view of Adventureland from 260 feet above the Iowa farmlands.

One of my biggest complaints about Adventureland for years is the pig shaped concession stand never sold any sort of pork product.  Maybe my posts lead to some changes as the pig now sells "Bacon on a Stick".

In addition to selling yummy, yummy bacon you can also learn where the different cuts of tasty pork come from.
