Hey look there's Illinois Mike in his seat in the back of the train.
Waldameer has this coaster the Ravine Flyer 2 and the kiddie coaster named
the Ravine Flyer 3 so what about Ravine Flyer 1? The first Ravine
Flyer lasted at Waldameer from 1922 to 1938. Just like this Ravine
Flyer it dove down the ravine and crossed the highway. In 1938 after
the ride did not have enough speed to crest a hill the coaster started going
back and forth above the highway. One rider became hysterical so her
brother stood up to try to calm her. Unfortunately when the train
stopped he fell from the ride to his death on the highway below. Despite
the ride not being at fault for the fatality the owner of Waldameer's wife
was extremely distraught about the incident she convinced him to tear the
coaster down.
With plenty of negative-g's, lateral g's and a really twisted layout this
stretch of track is my favorite part of Ravine Flyer 2. It's a ninety
degree banked turn that is followed by a high speed dive down into the ravine.
So what was my thought about Ravine Flyer 2 after my first ride? It
is definitely in my top 10 wooden coasters. After ten laps?
It is currently my #5 after The Voyage, Boulder Dash, Boardwalk Bullet &
The Raven. If there was any one reason to get to Waldameer this coaster
is it!
