If you didn't know the Grand Ole carousel has been closed for a couple of years now as it goes through a much needed restoration.

Six Flags St. Louis is taking on the effort to not only preserve but to keep this hundred and seven year old carousel running into the future.

Most of the horses have been taken down, stripped, repaired, and painted with just the structure of the carousel remaining to work on.

When the Grand Ole Carousel was added to Six Flags St. Louis in 1972 it was given a westward expansion theme with the paintings on the rounding boards to reflect those who explored and settled the vast expanses west of the Mississippi river.

All of the rounding boards with their cherubs and paintings are still on the ride ready to be restored with the exception of one.  Chances are the work is beginning on these and once they are off the ride we'll see the carousel structure painted in preparation for the return of the horses.  Six Flags St. Louis is working on bringing the Grand Ole carousel back for the 2023 season.  It'll be great seeing this classic get the love and care it deserves before coming back to life for generations of riders to enjoy.
