Getting off the history of Mr. Freeze for a moment I knew we
had my sister-in-law Beth hooked on being a coaster enthusiast when
she started taking as many pictures of Mr. Freeze as I was during
the behind the scenes tour.
The four shuttle coasters that Premier Rides built for 1997 were the
two Mr. Freeze's and the twin tracked Batman & Robin: The Chiller at
Six Flags Great Adventure.
The Chiller was the only of the Premier Rides shuttle coasters that
opened in 1997. It opened briefly and then went down when
problems emerged. Those coasters were not long for the world
as after reliably opening in 1998 they lasted barely a decade with
long down times, massive modifications to the track and several
malfunctions that led to Six Flags completely removing the coaster
in 2007. It has been sold to a park in Brazil but as of 2015
is has yet to be erected.
The two Mr. Freeze coasters on the other hand have been a complete
success that have really gotten better with age mostly do to Six
Flags St. Louis and Six Flags Over Texas not giving up on these
rides.
The first modification that Six Flags did to Mr. Freeze turned what
was a coaster that was full of head banging and pain into a smooth
and extremely fun ride. That was removing the over the
shoulder restraints and replacing them with lap bars. That
happened in 2002 and since then Mr. Freeze has been giving his
nemesis Batman the run for his money for which one is the best
coaster in the park.
