Thankfully a couple of things happened to save the Whizzer and
keep it with us. The first thing that happened was pretty much
everyone who had their first coaster ride on the Whizzer wrote to Six
Flags corporate in protest of loosing a beloved coaster. Secondly
what I was told that Shock Wave had a mechanical issue pop up towards
the end of the season that made Six Flags reevaluate which ride they
were going to remove.
Due to both things happening Superman is out there in the parking lot
(the park did add some dirt and landscaping over the old parking lot
that Shock Wave was built over) and we still have the Whizzer to enjoy.
Here is Bond going for a ride on what has to be the most comfortable
coaster train ever.
The Whizzer is the only remaining Anton Schwarzkopf designed and built
Speed Racer type coaster in North America. There used to be
several others including the Whizzer's twin at California's Great
America, the Big Bend at Six Flags Over Texas and the Zambezi Zinger at
Worlds of Fun in Kansas City.
The Zambezi Zinger is actually a large part of the reason why Bond and I
headed to Six Flags Great America this weekend. My friends Kevin
and Jennifer from
WorldsofFun.org
made the pilgrimage to
Parque Del
Cafe in Columbia to ride the Zambezi Zinger where it was moved to
after being removed from Worlds of Fun in 1997. They posted video
and live streamed their adventure on the Zinger. Watching that
video and after having had a rough week at work I needed some Whizzer
time.
Looking around the Whizzer it is pretty obvious there has been some work
going on with one of the old stairs removed and some land clearing.
