Apocalypse begins with a hundred foot tall lift hill and a
spiraling ninety foot drop.
This has never been my favorite coaster even when it opened at Six Flags
Great America.
Maybe the reason is that it has Intamin trains instead of Bolliger &
Mabillard designed trains that came on later stand up coasters but it
has always been a bit rough.
I'm not sure if the change of climate from Chicago to Washington DC had
something to do with it but it actually is a bit smoother and more
enjoyable to ride at Six Flags America.
As a photographer I do have to say that a massive improvement to this
location over being shoehorned at the back of Six Flags Great America is
you can actually get around it a bit to shoot the ride in action.
One small note though. This photo was not taken from within the
park where guests can normally go. With the Coaster Con there were
several behind the scenes tours that took us back in between Apocalypse
and Roar where I was able to snap this one.
