The show is called "One Ocean" and is a multimedia presentation with
a huge television screen behind the whales but I really didn't even notice
it as I couldn't take my eyes off of the whales.
The killer whales are joined by trainers but after an unfortunate drowning
of one by one if them by one of the whales being playful a few years ago
seeing a trainer swimming with them as part of the show is long gone.
The thing is even though these mammals are highly intelligent and can perform
a highly choreographed show like One Ocean they are still wild animals...animals
that are significantly larger and stronger than us.
Of course after the death animal rights activists threw a fit and protested
SeaWorld claiming abuse and cruelty. Now I have a hard time wrapping
my brain around that as first off if SeaWorld abused any of their animals
those creatures won't live long and it is not like you can go and just round
up another killer whale easily or inexpensively. If SeaWorld's trainers
were beating them would they have any customers? If they were abused
and beaten by their trainers as alleged would the animals follow orders
on queue...especially during a show when there is no way the trainers could
beat them into doing tricks? I don't think so. In my life I have ran
into several people who took the path that the trainers at SeaWorld took
and all of them loved the animals they came into contact and got to work
with and would never abuse one of them.
You can't get the masses to where the killer whales are but bringing them
to where the people are is the best way to show the wonders of the natural
world and reminds all of us that we need to make sure to take care of this
fragile blue and green ball out in the vastness of the universe.
Ok I'll get off my soapbox and get back to the killer whales at SeaWorld.
