After Old Chicago closed it sat for years empty and unused. There
were various plans floated from using it for the Worlds Fair, turning it
into an Outlet Mall, using at as a motion picture soundstage, making it
a Trade Expo for China or an indoor concert venue but none of these plans
ever came together. The last event at Old Chicago was not in the building
itself but foreshadowed the future a bit when in August of 1981 the Chicagoland
Chrysler Dealers had a huge car sale in the parking lot.
From that point until 1986 there was a lot of talk about what to do but
no real action. So in February of that year the demolition of Old
Chicago began.
Here are photos of the demolition of Old Chicago.
After demolishing the mall section of Old Chicago the demolition began of
the heart of the whole complex, the Old Chicago Fairgrounds.
