Lakemont Park Altoona, Pennsylvania October 1999 Page One
Lakemont Park is
in Altoona Pennsylvania and is home to the world's oldest roller coaster
- Leap The Dips.
Leap The Dips was built in 1902 by the E. Joy Morris Company. It is the only "side friction" coaster in existence in North America with one other of it's kind operating in England.
Leap the Dips is a very fun and interesting ride. It's not the fastest or most intense ride but to coaster lovers it is a link to the past.
Here's a picture to explain why it's called a "side friction" coaster. The car's wheels are on the bottom to support the weight and it also has guide wheels on the side to direct the car. From this shot you can see the side rails and the bottom rail. Click
