Drawing on not only Hollywood for actors but real cowboys and Indians to
populate Calico is what made the Ghost Town such a memorable experience
for people like my father.
The Knott's Berry Farm of today continues that tradition with a cast of
characters who will welcome you to their town like the Mayor here.
We all signed the register as new citizens of Calico. What I
absolutely loved is that you could spend a whole day in the Ghost Town
talking and interacting with its residents.
You literally are immersed in a giant old west live action role playing
experience in the Ghost Town. If you want to go and have a drink
with the types of ladies who worked in a saloon you can. I ended
up sitting on down and playing a few hands of poker with them. The
Mayor asked that we go and help out round up a outlaw and had we decided
to take him up we had people to go to in order to find out where to get
him. It is just completely immersive and amazing.
The Calico Saloon has a wonderful selection of drinks. Looking
back I am kicking myself for not trying the Boysenberry Draft.
In the corner of the Ghost Town is the legendary Bird Cage Theatre.
The theater modeled after the original theater in Tombstone, AZ has been
a home for Melodramas at Knott's Berry Farm since 1954. There have
been many actors who have graced the stage here from my friend Dink
O'Neal (Cheers, Psych, Monk, Wrecked and many other small roles) to
Steve Martin who started here when he was eighteen and stayed for the
next four years.
