The Calico Mine Train that opened in 1960 was Bud Hurlbut's first themed attraction. He was known for building miniature trains for parks around the country. For this one he took out all the stops including mortgaging his house and selling his Cadillac to get it up and running.

The ride is nothing more than an elaborately themed train ride through a mountain. Walt Disney; a train junkie, was fond of showing up to watch the Calico Mine Ride's construction. Bud's gamble paid off as the Calico Mine Train immediately became one of Knott's most popular attractions.
