The giant piece of garbage that looms over Flight Deck is the
notorious Son of Beast.
In case you didn't know about SOB it is the worlds tallest wooden
coaster that was built by the cheapest bidder. The Roller Coaster
Corporation of America, through a throwaway subsidiary (throwaway in
case they get sued, like they were over this ride) built Son of Beast in
2000 from a design by Werner Stengel. It's big draw was that it
was the only wooden coaster in modern times with a loop. The loop
was it's only good part and sadly after an accident on the ride they
removed the loop in order to add lighter trains as heavy trains were the
cause of the accident.
So Bond and I left Mike as he didn't want his spine compacted and took
Son of Beast for a ride. Allie told Bond he'd hate it and she was
right. The whole ride is like driving 70 mph over speed bumps and
potholes, not fun. When we hit the mid-course brake he asked if it
was over and I wish it was as well. It sucked, we got off and
won't ever contemplate riding it ever again.
Interesting note there was an injury the same day we rode it that shut
it down again. Maybe Cedar Fair will one day remove this pile of
garbage and put up something good, or at least vaguely good because Son
of Beast is not. Unless you want the credit avoid this ride at all
costs.
Still one good thing about riding Son of Beast was that it was almost as
high as Diamondback. You see Bond had been worrying about trying
Diamondback because of it's height. Having done Son of Beast he
agreed to take Diamondback for a try.
