For Idlewild's early years there were no rides, just the beauty
of the site on the shores of the Loyalhanna Creek outside of Ligonier, PA
to attract visitors.
Sometime in the 1880's Idlewild acquired the land on the opposite side of
the creek to expand the park.
Lakes were dug for fishing and boating, hiking & bicycing trails were
added, a concert hall was built and in 1896 Idlewild's first ride appeared;
a steam powered carousel made by the T.M. Harton Company.
Idlewild's natural beauty and expanding entertainment drew customers out
to the park in droves and with a beautiful park, picnicking still allowed
and rides that everyone can enjoy Idlewild Park is an institution in the
area.
On the far side of the Loyalhanna Creek sits Raccoon lagoon which is really
geared to younger children. Don't worry though as Idlewild has a full
sized trolley for everyone that we will get to soon.
