Imagine you ran an amusement park for a minute. One of your
rides reaches the end of its life span. Would you remove it or do
something interesting with it? The Great Escape chose the latter and
turned what looks to be the ride platform from a Paratrooper and turned
it into a dining location right across from the Skillet Marketplace.
Speaking of old rides that may be on their last legs. I was unable
to get on the Alpine Bobsled the last time we were here because it was down
so I was curious if Bond and I were going to take one of the few remaining
Bobsled Coasters that appeared at amusement parks in the 1980's for a ride.
I actually got to ride this coaster when it was at Six Flags Great America
as Rolling Thunder and really enjoyed it. Rolling Thunder was
long gone from that park as it was replaced by Viper before Bond was even
born. It came to The Great Escape in 1998 and in addition to
the change of location it received a new name and what looks to be a used
bobsled probably from the nearby Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex.
I have heard rumors from numerous sources saying that Alpine Bobsled might
soon go to the big coaster graveyard in the sky with many others like it.
With all of the rust on the track...
...and the way the paint is peeling off of it I'd have to say that there
is not a whole lot of care for this ride in The Great Escape's budget.
I can understand as it is not the most thrilling ride out there but upkeep
has to be less expensive than removal. Unfortunately when we walked
by the entrance for the Alpine Bobsled an employee was standing there informing
us that it was not running and that he did not know when it might be.
We figured that we would stop by once more before heading out of the park
to see if we could ride it.
