I love how Landry's, Inc. who owns the Pleasure Pier went out with
the old school look and theme for the entire pier.
The idea was to embrace the pier's history while building something for
the future.
During the Second World War there was a need for somewhere that off duty
sailors and soldiers could relax for a few hours when making their way
through the Port of Galveston or being stationed at the Galveston Army
Air Field, Fort Crocket and Fort San Jacinto. Galveston with shore
batteries and thousands of troops the island was practically a
militarized zone during the war. As a result of all of those
troops needing a little rest and relaxation the Pleasure Pier was built
in 1943.
The Pleasure Pier back then had a few rids in the front of the park, a
convention center, a ballroom for dancing & movies and at the far
reaches of the pier soldiers and sailors on leave could rent a pole,
throw a line out and do a little salt water fishing during their day
off.
The Galveston Pleasure Pier did its service during the war and it stayed
as a staple of the island life until 1961 when Hurricane Carla took aim
on Galveston Island and destroyed the Pleasure Pier.
