Next on our whirlwind tour of Disneyland was the final land to
visit: Tomorrowland.
Sadly much has changed since my last visit. There was no more
Adventure Thru Inner Space, Mission to Mars or the legendary Peoplemover
to visit. The raised People mover track is still there but after
Disneyland transformed the ride into the the "Rocket Rods" ride that
completely failed to work it has been unused for any sort of ride.
Disneyland still has the classic Submarine Voyage that opened in 1959.
Instead of scrapping the ride like Walt Disney World did with their
version that was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Disneyland updated this
classic and added the characters from Finding Nemo to breathe some new
life into this ride.
Technically the Submarine Voyage doesn't have submarines as the boats
never dive. There are just effects that make riders feel as if
they are diving to the depths of the ocean floor. The old ride
took you through the ocean to the North Pole, graveyard of lost ships,
to the ruins of Atlantis, all the way to the bottom of the ocean and a
finale where you are attacked by a sea serpent. Along the way
guests could look out of the porthole and watch the scenery as it went
by while the Captain narrated our journey.
The updated version has underwater video screens seamlessly blended with
the scenery so you get to live the movie Finding Nemo.
Just a note if you are claustrophobic or don't like being squeezed into
a tube with people right up against both sides of you then the Submarine
Voyage might be skipped in order to avoid the anxiety attack.
