Being in the middle of Brooklyn I had expected Coney Island to be
run down, dirty and seedy, yeah it's not in it's prime but it is not any
of those things. In fact I was surprised how clean it was and my "city
sense" as to a place being unsafe never came up, of course there were
NYPD all over the place but still it was not anywhere as near as bad as
I thought it would be.
The Parachute Drop sat there on the horizon and drew us to it past the few
open bars and restaurants on the boardwalk.
Instead of seeing the Statue of Liberty many immigrants first view of America
was of Coney Island. In 1934 Deno Vourderis saw the Wonder Wheel as
he came to America at the age of 14 and he swore that one day he would own
it. That day came in 1984. His family still runs it to this
day.
The Parachute Jump which has been called the "Eifel Tower of Brooklyn"
sits on the south end of Coney Island's amusement area next to Keyspan Park,
home of the Brooklyn Cyclones baseball team.
