The Marx Brothers began their career doing vaudeville shows at Coney
Island as well as numerous other classic stars like Eddie Cantor and Jimmie
Durante who played piano at one of the many bars and clubs that used to
keep the thrills going after the sun went down.
I didn't do this but it was touching to see my fellow trip members represent.
It's not the biggest coaster forum out there but we have an awesome group
who has a ton of fun together and everyone is welcome. So if you want,
come on in, kick your shoes off
and make yourself at home.
Brian left his mark with his crutches and then Corey added a little SOS
to it as Brian messed up his ankle a week before the trip. So he either
hobbled after us or we pushed him around in a wheelchair.
With Coney Island right in the city honestly I hadn't expected the beach
to be as nice as it was. I mean it was clean, the water was warm and
I'd rather be out there sprawled out on a blanket enjoying the summer sun
than being stuck in the concrete valleys of the city.
Another interesting history note about Coney Island is that this is where
Thomas Edison came to film a demonstration in order to sell his Direct Current
method of electricity over Nickolas Tesla's Alternate Current. In
the stadium at Luna Park fifteen hundred people paid to watch the demonstration
that he was filming back in 1903. The demonstration was to show how
deadly Alternating Current was.
Do you want to know how he demonstrated how deadly it was...he electrocuted
an elephant. Needless to say we all have direct current running through
our homes as a result.
