Chippewa Lake Park in Medina
Ohio was a small lakeside amusement park from 1878 to 1978 before closing
it's doors for good. Twenty-four years had passed since the parks
coasters thrilled the masses so I worked it so we had time to stop by
after our Knoebel's trip for a look. We met up with Josh who had
been through the park before and he acted as a guide to what was left
of Chippewa Lake Park.
We didn't go through the main
entrance because of the fencing there but instead headed across a field
to the coaster. To get to the coaster we crossed a newly dug ditch
which looked like it drained this portion of the Big Dipper's remains
which had previously been resting in a swamp.
It's neat as well as sad to
see a coaster and a park in this sad state of disrepair. I wish
Chippewa Lake had survived but it'd had a hard time surviving today
with Cedar Point and Six Flags all within a hour or so drive away.
Wandering through the woods that were once Chippewa Lake Park was fascinating
because after every turn some remnant of the park presented itself to
you.
The forest is slowly taking
everything back! It's hard to pick out what's coaster and what's
alive in this tangled mess.
