The Cass County Dentzel Carousel

Since I'm the one behind the camera 99% of the time here at Negative-G
here's a little portrait of me reflected in the ring machine's chrome.
The center pole that the Cass County Carousel goes around used to be the
main mast of a sailing ship. Back in the early 1900's the age of sail
was ending and the age of machinery was here so Gustav Dentzel probably
got this recycled part for his carousels pretty cheap.
Bond and I took ten spins around the carousel and grabbed as many rings
as we could laughing and enjoying every little bit on this ride. It's
really great on a warm summer night to head into a town park and hear the
sounds of a band organ and carousel mingling with the sounds of kids on
a playground and a nearby baseball game. It's just a slice of old
school Americana that's a rare thing these days.
On what was to be his last ride Bond reached out for a ring and got the
brass ring. When you "reach for the brass ring" as the saying goes
and get it you get a free ride on the carousel so there was one more go
around for Bond.
We had a really memorable evening visiting the Cass County Carousel.
Wanting to keep this carousel running for generations to come we donated
a few bucks and visited the gift store where Bond got his own brass ring.
If you somehow find yourself headed to Indiana Beach or to Logansport Indiana
find your way to Riverside Park and take the Cass County Dentzel Carousel
for a ride.
