When you are visiting SeaWorld in San Diego; which a lot of people are
going to over the next few years with all the coasters that are being
added there, you need to make sure to budget some time in your day to
head a mile west to Mission Beach for true rarity and a classic coaster.
Situated on San Diego's Mission Beach; that is a narrow stretch of land
between Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean, is Belmont Park which is the
home of one of the two remaining classic seaside coasters on the West
Coast.
Belmont Park and the Giant Dipper have a history that is filled with
more ups and downs than the Prior & Church designed coaster.
Opening on July 4th, 1925; the Mission Beach Amusement Center, was built
to attract people to the beach, get people to ride the San Diego
Electric Railway, lure development and to help sell land that the
park owner/sugar magnate John Speckles owned adjacent to the park.
With the parks first guest ninety-four years ago to today the Giant
Dipper has always been the star of Belmont Park.
