The Tornado is Adventureland's oldest coaster. It opened in
1978 which was Adventureland's third year of operation.
The Tornado is a really fun out and back design by Bill Cobb.
There is some great airtime on the Tornado and it is a really fun old
school ride that just fits perfectly into the cornfields across the
street from it.
The only negative to the Tornado is that it can only run one train so
the lines can get a bit long. It has two trains and used to run
them but after adding seat belts that add to the dispatch time along
with skid brakes that are not as efficient in stopping a train the park
decided to run just one train. I am not a big fan of changing out
parts of a ride but with the park that Adventureland is growing into
taking the skid brakes off of Tornado and adding modern brakes in order
to run two trains and have the added capacity for when the park fills up
would be a good decision to make.
Another good idea would be to get rid of the Dragon. If you will
notice that neither Bond or myself is riding the Dragon. We
decided to leave that pain to John, Draven, Paul, Spencerman and his dad
Terry.
