While Six Flags Fiesta Texas really blew me away so much that I
declared it the best park in the chain I really like the charm and
feel of Six Flags Over Texas.
The Oil Derrick; standing at three hundred feet tall has been the
icon of Six Flags Over Texas since it first broke the skyline in
1969. I really wanted to head up top to take in the views of
the park but with long lines and with both of us really starting to
miss home after a very long trip it is one of the things that we
have earmarked for a future trip to the park.
Superman is a newer addition to the skyline of Six Flags Over Texas
and is quite a bit more thrilling than the Oil Derrick as it shoots
you up and down a 325 foot tall tower.
Remember that I mentioned that there were a lot of firsts at Six
Flags Over Texas? This is one of them.
The Runaway Mine Train; which was built in 1966, is the worlds first
mine train coaster. It was built by Arrow Dynamics and along
with the Matterhorn at Disneyland developed the concept of using
tubular steel track for roller coasters. Being able to bend
tubular steel in any direction is what gave us the looping coasters
of the 70's and 80's, the inverted coasters of the 1990's and the
hyper and giga coaster behemoths of today. The Runaway Mine
Train is a baby step on the path to 400 foot tall coasters and is a
classic that should be experienced and appreciated by everyone..
