You do get a nice pop of air in the back seat coming over the drop.

I'm not sure what the fins are going over the first drop unless they're brakes. The thing is I didn't really feel any deceleration so maybe they just take a miniscule bit off of it to keep it from being too intense.

Steel Hawg's first drop is one of those great "holy crap" moments. The thing that makes Steel Hawg awesome is that it has several of them.
