The Runaway Mountain Coaster is not a traditional roller coaster in the sense that once dispatched the ride is in control and you are just a rider.

In the early 1970's mostly ski resorts looking for something to bring in some summer time revenue added "alpine slides" which were fiberglass, steel or concrete troughs that ran down the snow free ski slopes in which sleds with hand brakes gave a bobsled/coaster kind of experience riding on them.
